Postgraduate Programmes

The Kulliyyah of Science was established in the year 2000 to encourage multidisciplinary and innovative research towards attaining national and international recognition. Postgraduate programmes offered in various pure and applied branches of the natural sciences, imbued with islamic knowledge. They are based on the expertise available at the department in the Kulliyyah:

The Kulliyyah, cognizant of fast-changing nature of the sciences, aims to produce graduates with deep theoretical knowledge and highly developed practical skills, whom employers would be eager to recruit. We do this by combining quality teaching with high impact research. Our curriculum employs a range of teaching methods that not only ensure efficient and effective teaching and learning, but also foster a capacity for independent learning. Besides, we provide an attractive, supportive environment for the development of professional skills and we offer relevant and valuable work placements to all students who wish to take advance  of them. We train the students such a way that upon graduation, the will be of value to academia, industry or any relevant discipline in the wider community of Malaysia and globally.

Currently, the existing academic staffs of Department of Biotechnology and Institute of Oceanography and Maritime Studies have been supervising the postgraduate students of KOS who are willing to conduct their research in the fields of Marine Sciences. The students those who have awarded their undergraduate degree from Marine Science of different Universities from Malaysia and other countries are eligible to apply for their M.Sc. and Ph.D. at Kulliyyah of Science under the programmes Biotechnology and Biosciences. It is hoped that postgraduate programs in marine science will be conducted by new department ‘Marine Science and Technology’ under the Kulliyyah of Science and Institute of Oceanography, IIUM. 

In line with the vision and mission of IIUM, the core Kulliyyah and University courses offered will be imbued with Islamic Values to produce not only competent and skilled graduates but also with ethical and humanity values that would enable them to contribute to the society and make good decision based on the knowledge gained. For instant, Ethical issue in Modern Science have become an important debate nowadays. Billions of muslims knowledge worldwide are regarding new scientific products for the benefit of mankind. As a leading International Islamic University, Kulliyyah of Science IIUM is offering a subject for postgraduate students KOS 6000 “Ethics in Science and Technology.” Certainly, this will serve the Islamic community locally and globally on the ethical issues towards  the utilization of High-Technology in modern science. All the postgraduate students need to pass this subject during their postgraduate programmes (M.Sc. and Ph.D by research) in following areas:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Statistics

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to pass a certain level of English proficiency before they allowed to be admitted into the Programme at the Kulliyyah.  Currently the Kulliyyah only offers Master and PhD programmes by  Research only where students are required to carry out research work and complete the thesis in their chosen area of specialization. The normal duration Master's and PhD Programmes are four and six semesters, respectively.
