MoU Signing Ceremony between IIUM and Istanbul Zaim University, Turkey
The Signing Ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Istanbul Zaim University (IZU) Turkey was held on May 22, 2017 at IIUM Gombak Campus.
The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Abdel Aziz Berghout, Deputy Rector (Internationalisation & Industry and Community Relations) IIUM, and Prof. Dr. Mehmet Bulut, President of Istanbul Zaim University.
The relationship between the two universities began on 30th October 2015 with the signing of a Letter of Intent (LI) which paved the way for cooperation and collaboration including joint conference, visiting scholar programme and publications. Between 28th and 30th May 2016, both universities jointly held the International Symposium on Waqf and Higher Education at Zaim University’s campus in Istanbul. It was a very successful event with many papers presented and published from both sides.
This was then followed by a three-month academic attachment at Zaim University as part of the visiting scholar programme where Associate Professor Dr. Dzuljastri Abdul Razak from IIUM was given the opportunity to conduct various academic activities and discussions in the area of Islamic Finance in Istanbul.
Through the signing of the MoU, both universities are keen to extend further their collaboration to include students and faculty exchanges, workshops and joint research. Currently, both universities are involved in a joint research to study the impact of small and medium enterprises (SME) on the economic development of Malaysia and Turkey. In addition, the two universities would like to collaborate with the International Research Centre for Islamic Economics and Finance (IRCIEF) in Turkey, with IZU positioning itself to be a leader in this area in Turkey. Furthermore, both universities are eager to work jointly in the fast growing Halal industry that involves various sectors including food, finance, tourism, medicine and packaging.

The International Cooperation and Exchange Office (ICEO) is entrusted with the task of assisting IIUM in achieving its mission of internationalization. The main function of the office is to act as a central body which coordinates and holds information about any matters at the international level. ICEO is largely responsible for the recruitment of International students for the university, which is in line with the university’s strategic plan of having 25% of its student population made up of international students by the year 2015.
The office is also in charge of the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) between IIUM and various universities and organizations around the world. The MOUs allow a progressive and rewarding collaboration between parties and make the exchange of knowledge, experience and resources viable. One example would be the cooperation agreement between Al-Bukhary Foundation and IIUM, where students from poor Islamic countries would be given an opportunity to study at the university. Apart from playing its role in recruiting more International students for the university, the ICEO has also been given the responsibility to co-ordinate visits by International visitors to IIUM, and events that involve International guests.
ICEO hopes to devise more strategic marketing plans which will help to attract more International students to choose IIUM as their ideal university. ICEO also aspires to assist IIUM in achieving more collaboration with other high-ranking universities around the world which will ultimately help the IIUM to be recognized as a highly-ranked university .
